Embracing June

Can you believe it's June already? It feels like just yesterday we were bundled up in our winter coats, and now we're debating whether the sanctuary air conditioning is too cold (it is) or not cold enough (also true, depending on where you sit).
June is one of my favorite months — long days, warm evenings, my birthday, and a calendar that invites us to slow down, gather, and enjoy. And here at Temple Beth Israel, we are very good at gathering.
June also marks the close of our programming year, and I just have to say — you people are something else. In the best possible way.
Thank you to our Rabbi, Maria, and every volunteer who gave their time, energy, and occasional baked goods to make this year so meaningful. And to our Religious School families: mazel tov on completing another wonderful year of Jewish learning. These kids are the future of Beth Israel, and the future looks really good.
Did you know Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes way back in 1777? As a community that knows a thing or two about the deep meaning of symbols — a mezuzah, a Star of David, a yahrzeit candle — we can truly appreciate what it means to have a symbol that stands for something larger than ourselves.
So on June 14th, give a little nod to the flag, feel good about living in a country where we can worship freely, and maybe hum a few bars of something patriotic. We won't judge if you tear up a little.
Wishing you and yours a June filled with sunshine, laughter, good health, and at least one perfect summer evening where everything feels just right.
