Recharging Batteries

Shalom and Happy August Temple Beth Israel,

As we enter the last full official month of summer, I hope folks are able to use this month to recharge their batteries, perhaps visit nature, and ideally reconnect with friends and family. In July, I had the ability to accomplish all three when my mother, sister, and nephew visited for a week. We relaxed at our beautiful Plattsburgh City Beach on Lake Champlain, hiked Ausable Chasm, travelled out to the Amish and Akwesasne mohawk tribe, and ascended Whiteface Mountain via the gondola ride. It was a rare treat to spend so much time together with all three members of my family. I took immense pride in showing off our beautiful North Country which was made easy by the gorgeous weather.

For those of us who are staying local in August and want to involve visiting family/friends into our community, we have a few wonderful opportunities:

On August, Friday 21st, we will host our monthly family Shabbat service, starting at 5:30pm. This month we will dive into parsha Ki Teitzei as we learn about the mitzvah of helping people return lost items. All are encouraged to attend the short service, followed by a community wide meal, as we support the next generation of Jewish youth. If you’re interested in attending, please RSVP to the main office.

Lastly, on Sunday, August 23rd from 11am-3pm, we will host our annual picnic and field day at Cumberland Head State Park Pavilion. This is a fantastic chance to picnic among friends as we provide a BBQ filled with hot days, hamburgers, vegan dogs, and watermelon. Volunteers are needed to help bring some side salads, drinks, and desserts. Plenty of beach games too! If you’re interested, please RSVP to Stephen Cahill at 1-518-570-0927.

Enjoy the month/Chodesh tov,

Rabbi David Joslin
